Steve McCarthy is a Dublin illustrator and artist with a background in animation. His work can be seen in movies, gracing album covers, livening up whisky bottles, and complementing the talent of creative writers.

I met with Steve at his studio near the Ha’penny bridge. In hindsight, I probably should have warned him. I ended up catching him off-guard with my inconsiderate interview technique. Steve was in the middle of building a huge wooden viking shield complete with charming illustrated carvings and relief. He asked if he could do the interview and keep working at the same time. I said no. I wanted Steve to answer my questions through the medium of silly pictures. What follows is a very serious interview about serious things.
